The forecast however has been met with cynicism and doubt with opposition politicians claiming Alistair Darlings words are ‘preposterous’ and ‘ludicrously optimistic’. The Chancellor will have a tough time convincing people his word is right having been way off the mark with the level of borrowing Britain is taking on, having yesterday admitted that the debt of the country has soared to a post World War 2 high of £175bn.

The chancellor however remains defiant in the face of this criticism and seems fully aware that it was to come, in a statement he said ’Today doesn’t look good in terms of headlines and I’ve been resigned to that for some time, But I believe we have reason for confidence and we should not get ourselves into a reason for believing otherwise.’

Other items that will take the notice of the general public is a 1p raise in Alcohol, a 7p increase on Cigarettes and yet another raise on Fuel which is going up by 2p a litre from September and a further 1p above inflation each April for the next four years.

Owain- I’m originally from Kent and live in a flat with my mother when home but obviously at uni I live in my house in Cardiff. Kent is not the nicest of places if I’m honest but its home. Education wise my background is pretty simply that I have an A level in Sociology and English and I did study Maths.

Gareth- So what are your ambitions in life?

Owain – I just want to get by really, just get myself a job and live comfortably. Im not really interested or motivated in going for the super fantastic job.

Gareth- Any interests outside of University?

Owain – I am a very keen Orthinoligist In my spare time and Cardiff bay is a really good place to go for this, there are so many different birds down there to look at. I other interests as well, I enjoy watching Anime also as well as reading all different kinds of literature. I have also recently taken up Ken-do which I’m enjoying.

Gareth- Do you have any journalistic heroes?

Owain – Clarke Kent! He’s just the ultimate journalist. In fact he makes most of his own stories so he’d never run out, easily the best journalist in the world.

Gareth – Any fears at all?

Owain – Wasps I guess, but they are more annoying and buzzy than something to be scared of. I guess I would be scared if someone was holding a knife and looking right at me, other than that I’m pretty fearless I think.

Gareth – And Finally what are your favourite things in this world?

Owain – I have a few things I am especially happy with, clothing mainly my hat I really like. My boots I really like also. And I don’t think I would be happy to be without my cigarettes.
